Internships

What is an internship?

An internship can be a paid or unpaid work experience that concentrates in a field of study or career interest. It typically offers work specific to these. This can be a rewarding opportunity to discover where you want to take your future as you apply your personal interests to a work environment. Plus, internships are excellent to include on a resume.

When can I do an internship?

You can do an internship anytime during your undergraduate career. Internships can be an essential experience to discover what you like and dislike about your current career choice or field of study. It can give insight about what work culture you prefer, how you like to work (hands-on or indirectly), and how you want to continue in that career or choose another.

Frequently asked questions

There are two timelines for the On-Campus Internship Program. Some internships will start in August and end in May. Others will start in January and end in December (including the summer term).

To qualify for the program, students should follow these guidelines:

  • Cannot be graduating during the academic year in which they are participating. As a result, seniors do not qualify for the program.
  • Must be enrolled in 12 credits or more.
  • Must have at least a GPA of 2.5.

Beyond the program-specific requirements, students should review the job description for the internship they are applying for to determine position specific qualifications.

Student interns generally work no more than 15 hours per week. However, we recommend asking the department if you would like to know their specific expectations regarding required hours.

If interns do not complete the professional development requirements, the On-Campus Internship Program will not be recorded on their IU Indianapolis Experiential and Applied Learning Record, nor will they receive certification of completion from the Office of Student Employment.

No. It is not a hiring requirement for students to have a federal work-study award in this program.

Like applying for any jobs for Jags, students can apply for internships through Handshake. Log in to Handshake with your IU credentials to start searching.

When you apply for internships through Handshake, position titles will have "On-Campus Internship Program" next to them. These indicate that they are a part of the program.

All positions in the program will include additional information about the program within the job description.

Students should speak with their academic advisor to determine which class is best for them based on their program of study. If you have further questions, contact Karla McLaughlin, the program coordinator.

Yes; however, students cannot be in the same position for more than one year. We encourage students to apply for another position within the program if they wish to acquire another On-Campus Internship Program experience for their IU Indianapolis Experiential and Applied Learning Record.
