Whether you are creating your first cover letter or tailoring a current one, this session with a student employment professional will cover the format and content needed to market your skills for specific part-time positions.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of a tailored cover letter to an academically relevant job search
  • Create and maintain a cover letter structure that articulates transferable skills
  • Create an action plan to finalize cover letter development

During this session, a student employment professional will help you to understand the format and content needed to market your skills for your part-time job search.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of a tailored resume for an academically relevant job search
  • Create and maintain a resume structure that articulates transferable skills
  • Identify experiential opportunities to gain academically relevant experience
  • Create an action plan to continue and to finalize resume development

This session with a student employment professional will teach you about resources to help you prepare for your part-time job interview.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Define the value of the interview to the hiring process
  • Understand steps involved in preparing for an interview
  • Identify interview formats and common interview questions
  • Describe the need to articulate experience and transferable skills in response to interview questions
  • Understand effective interview behavior, etiquette, and communications
  • Identify strategies for interview follow-up

After your part-time interview prep session, you can request a follow-up practice interview. This session will simulate a real interview, and you will receive feedback to continue improving your interview skills.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Articulate experience and transferable skills in response to interview questions
  • Demonstrate effective interview behavior, etiquette, and communications
  • Understand and identify steps to continue interview preparation

During a job search session with a student employment professional, you will gain a better understanding of the job search process and will develop action items for achieving your job search goals.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Navigate online job posting resources and systems
  • Clarify the purpose of an academically relevant job search
  • Identify and utilize job search strategies
  • Understand the importance of tailoring job search documents and communications
  • Tailor job search strategies for work-study-eligible positions
  • Identify the next steps in a work-study job search and hiring process
  • Identify the next steps in your job search process

During a brief 15-minute drop-in discussion with a student employment professional, you can ask general questions about work-study and obtain work-study resources.

Following this meeting, you will be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of utilizing a work-study award in an academically relevant position
  • Identify the next steps in a work-study hiring process

Students who have been offered a community work-study position should contact fwsjobs@iu.edu to set up an I-9 verification appointment.

Student employment professionals are available to meet with you confidentially to discuss issues and concerns related to part-time employment.

Some example topics we can discuss and support you through are:

  • Supervisor and co-worker issues
  • Transitioning or separation processes and resources
  • Questions about pay rate inconsistency
  • Unhealthy or stressful workplace situations
  • Debrief of performance reviews
  • Referral to campus resources for harassment, discrimination, and student rights
  • Emergency financial referrals

Hire Attire (previously known as PAWS’ Closet) is a resource that provides free professional apparel to students who have a job interview, internship, or job. It will be moving locations and open for walk-ins soon. If you need business clothes before the new location opens, we can help! Contact us for more information.

Our services

For your convenience, we offer in-person and remote support for your job search documents and individual meetings.

If you need guidance on a resume or cover letter for a part-time job, you can submit it for feedback through our online review link. It can take three to five business days, but is a great tool for those who already have a resume built and prefer digital notes. If you need further guidance or clarity on the content within a resume, we suggest using our one-on-one appointment or drop-in services.

Drop-ins will be available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Appointments are in person or virtual. These are 30-minute appointments that are conducted in person at our office in University Tower, Suite 202, or via the digital Zoom platform. When you schedule your appointment, be sure to select the online meeting option if you would like to meet with us virtually, then you will receive further instructions in your confirmation.

This IU Expand course can be imported into Canvas sites by students, faculty, and staff looking to facilitate resume creation. The course helps the student to prepare a resume appropriate for part-time opportunities. No experience with resume writing required!

Topics include:

  • Purpose of a resume
  • Appropriate formatting for resumes
  • Action statements
  • Where to seek help from career services on campus

Presentations and workshops

We offer a variety of workshops centered on professional development topics. IU Indianapolis faculty, staff, and students can request presentations for classes, organizations, or other student groups.

Each year during Weeks of Welcome, our office provides an opportunity for you to connect with nearly 90 on- and off-campus employers with over 1,000 job openings.
